Welcome to the debut issue of Arch Nemesis Movie Reviews! I plan to use this space to review three different films on a weekly basis. To start, I plan on reviewing one new release, a classic, and a cult film.
The new release pick will typically be a new theatrical or streaming release. I don’t plan to limit the classic pick to a particular genre or era. The cult classic pick will be the most obscure, vile movie I can find. You’ll find many of my upcoming cult classic picks on a niche streaming service named Cult Pix. It’s not for the faint of heart.
Now, here’s the fun part. I’m not going to start this site with a formal rating scale or system in place. Instead, with your help, I plan on developing the most comprehensive movie rating system in existence. To make the perfect rating system, we need to learn about and discuss film theory and criticism, different acting styles, cinematography, narrative storylines, scriptwriting, and more! I encourage reader participation and eventually, I’ll set up a paid subscriber option so we can use the chat, podcast, and video options in Substack.
I bet you’re asking why we need a new complicated, bloated and multifaceted rating system. TBPH, we really don’t need a new rating system. We already have the Doughboy fork system, “Two Thumbs Up,” 5 Stars, and Rotten Tomatoes. But I’m doing this David Lynch “fishing for ideas” thing and all the ideas I’ve caught lately relate to developing a new rating system. Who am I to ignore the Lynchian fish swimming in my head?
So here we are. I’ll try to release my first proper newsletter this week, so keep an eye on your inbox, and don’t forget to say Fidelio before clicking.
In The Beginning …
Will you review the first movie where the train was coming at the screen and everyone in the theater got scared that it was going to hit them?
